Satwiwa Native American Indian Culture Center

We are going on a field trip next Wednesday, May 27, to Rancho Sierra Vista/Satwiwa, a site in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area.  We will attend a Biodiversity Program called The Chumash: A Changing People, A Changing Land, presented by the National Park Service.  We will leave at 8:30 A.M. and return by 2:00 P.M.

Students will eat lunch at the park.  They may bring a sack lunch with them, or the school can provide a sack lunch.  We need parent volunteers to chaperone, so any parents may come with us.  If there is space on the bus parents may come on the bus with us, or you may drive your own vehicle and meet us there.

Students should wear comfortable clothes and good shoes for walking.  We walk for about a mile.  Hiking boots are not required, but close-toed sturdy shoes are helpful.  Water is available, however during the hike there are no drinking fountains. Students are encouraged to bring water and, if possible, bring reusable bottles.

Please make sure to sign and return the permission slip on time.

Maya Angelou

Our poem for today is by the great  American poet Maya Angelou.  The poem is called "Harlem Hopscotch."

One foot down, then hop! It's hot.
Good things for the ones that's got.
Another jump, now to the left.
 Everybody for hisself.

In the air, now both feet down.
Since you black, don't stick around.
Food is gone, the rent is due,
Curse and cry and then jump two.

All the people out of work,
Hold for three, then twist and jerk.
Cross the line, they count you out.
 That's what hopping's all about.

Both feet flat, the game is done.
They think I lost, I think I won.

Love That Boy: A Poem by Walter Dean Meyers

Love that boy,
like a rabbit loves to run
I said I love that boy
like a rabbit loves to run
Love to call him in the morning
love to call him
'Hey there, son!'

He walk like his Grandpa,
Grins like his Uncle Ben.
I said he walk like his Grandpa,
And grins like his Uncle Ben.
Grins when he's happy,
When he sad, he grins again.

His mama like to hold him,
Like to feed him cherry pie.
I said his mama like to hold him.
Like to feed him that cherry pie.
She can have him now,
I'll get him by and by

He got long roads to walk down
Before the setting sun.
I said he got a long, long road to walk down
Before the setting sun.
He'll be a long stride walker,
And a good man before he done.

Dog: A Poem

Dog

By Valerie Worth

Under a maple tree
the dog lies down,
Lolls his limp
Tongue, yawns,
Rests his long chin
Carefully between
Front paws;
Looks up, alert;
Chops, with heavy
Jaws, at a slow fly,
Blinks, rolls
On his side,
Sighs, closes
His eyes: sleeps
All afternoon
In his loose skin.

More Poetry

Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening

by Robert Frost

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound’s the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

By the Great Horn Spoon!

We have started our last novel of the year, By the Great Horn Spoon!, a story about the California Gold Rush written by Sid Fleischman. As the blurb on the back of one edition of the book puts it:

"The year is 1849 and the California Gold Rush is on. Together with his butler Praiseworthy, young Jack Flagg sets out to save his pretty Aunt Arabella's fortune. On a ship bound from Boston to the California gold fields, they stow away in potato barrels . . . and their wild, swashbuckling adventures begin."
